Monumental village
On the slope of the mountain range of the same name, lies the village of Mijas. Its historic center (declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1969) has a layout of Arab origin with whitewashed streets, which are an improvised balcony overlooking the Mediterranean. The oval-shaped bullring; the Parish Church of the Immaculate Conception; or the sanctuary of the Virgin of Peña (XVII century), the patron saint of the town, are some emblematic monuments. Also its old Arab wall, where balconies and gardens that give the traveler a splendid panoramic view of the Costa del Sol. On the back of their donkey-taxis, we can make a small tour of the village. There are several museums that add more attraction to its tourist offer: the Carromato de Mijas (miniature collection), the Casa Museo de la Villa (historical-ethnological museum), the contemporary art center with works by Picasso, Dalí and Miró (CAC Mijas), the Molino de Harina and the interpretation center of the Watchtowers in the Torreón de La Cala (Mijas coast).

The beaches of Mijas
The beaches of Mijas have nine Q flags for Tourist Quality and three Blue Flags, while the rest of the coastline has the Environmental Certification ISO 14.001, thus guaranteeing the conservation of the natural values of our coast. The coast of Mijas contains a seabed that harbors a great biodiversity, with European, African, Atlantic and Mediterranean species. The seabed of Calahonda was catalogued as a Site of Community Interest (LICES 6170030 Calahonda) in June 2006 to ensure the conservation of the habitats and species that live in them, in an area of 1403.57 Ha. Its uniqueness consists in being at the limit of the natural distribution area of the habitat and that it harbors virgin stretches where abundant vegetation flourishes, especially Posidonia oceanica. Also of great value are the existence of gorgonians (a type of coral) and the fact of being an area with presence of cetaceans.
In the middle of the Mijas coast is La Cala, the central nucleus of the 12 kilometers of coastline of the municipality. La Cala, term of great fishing tradition, houses one of the most important watchtowers of the municipality: the Torreón de La Cala (interpretation center of the watchtowers of Mijas) and the Senda Litoral, pedestrian and cycling path that becomes the backbone of the Costa del Sol through its beaches. Its route opens a window to places you may not know, communicating with unique enclaves, watchtowers of cultural and historical interest, Mediterranean dunes or coastal sandy areas that are home to protected species of flora and fauna, beautiful corners for the sighting of seabirds and even cetaceans (found offshore). Walking along the Coastal Path will bring you closer to the points of interest of the coast dedicated to leisure, the practice of nautical sports and to the hotel establishments where you can taste the rich local gastronomy.
Both the climate and the landscape of Mijas offers innumerable sporting activities; paragliding, hang gliding, marked hiking trails in the Sierra de Mijas and mountain sports in general; you can play golf in its numerous golf courses and enjoy an unforgettable day in its water park, Aquamijas.
